‘Alternative routes in the city center’

Amsterdam (De)Tours
2017

Within the policy program "City in Balance", the municipality of Amsterdam investigates tourist flows in Amsterdam. The main question within this program is: How can we better spread visitors around the city and thus relieve pressure on central streets and sidewalks?

Together with Placemakers, Studio LONK investigated accessible and creative design solutions for this issue. In which ways can we influence the behavior of tourists and stimulate them to take a different path?

We test three small-scale interventions; each intended to allow pedestrians to subtly, consciously and less consciously ("nudging") deviate from a busy street (Damstraat). Studio LONK designed graphic patterns on the street, "selfie" signage and a tourist counter. Researchers from OIS did qualitative and quantitative effect measurements.
